How is 2002 going to be for you? Will it be better than 2001? Maybe
the last year was so great that it would be hard to top. Maybe it was
awful and you are glad to see the back of it. Whether it was an
extreme or moderate experience, next year is bound to be different.
The wise men are quite mysterious figures in the seasonal story. They
were wise to follow the star and wise to arrive in Bethlehem albeit
with a bit of help from government officials. After their encounter
with Jesus we are told that they went back via another route. In their
case it was a literal route to avoid danger. It is also a picture of life
after meeting the Messiah. Everything changes after such an
encounter: working practices must be hallmarked by integrity and
transparency; colleagues will be seen as a reflection of their maker;
finance will be a means to an end where both the means and the end matter;
finding a balance is not an optional extra, but an essential ingredient of
our lives; spirituality is for all employees and our task is to model it
and speak about it.
God is always calling us to walk a different route. In 2002 the
marketplace will need to see again what that means. There will be
training programmes, in-house changes, self help tool-kits and
developmental strategies for us to use. They will be of use, but at the
heart of the seasonal story is a message. You can take a different
route only when you have met the real Messiah. It’s not just walking,
it’s walking in the Spirit that will transform 2002 for us. For that we
need to see the risen Messiah.
