Just when you think you’ve got the answer….. they
change the question!
Even the most adventurous human beings have an
intuitive fear of new and unfamiliar situations. The
workplace often presents us with the challenge of the
unknown, or to put it in down-to-earth language, things
that we don’t have a clue about! For some this creates
anxiety and even fear. It’s a fear born out of a sense of
inadequacy and, like most workplace fears, it raises the
possibility of losing the job.
So how do we come to terms with the ever changing
workplace, new technology and restructured practices?
I once heard an old preacher explain that there are
three hundred and sixty-six ‘fear nots’ in the Authorised
Version of the bible. It seems that God is well aware of
our human habit of fearfulness. I haven’t counted them
all, but if the preacher was right then there’s one for each day of the year including leap years.
Of course it’s not just a mantra – you don’t just get out
of bed and say ‘fear not’ – nor is it simply self-motivation
or the power of positive thinking. ‘Fear nots’ in the
bible are there for a reason.
One of the most common is, “Fear not for I am with
You”. Since the ‘I am’ doesn’t change this seems like a
good approach to take when everything else does.
Psalm 23
1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
