Advent 4 God So Loved: Joyful Union

Do you ever think of God as happy? It’s not always easy to see him in such terms but I will try to catch a glimpse with you. This is our fourth and last look at God so loved or God loves you so much that he gave. Christmas is the great unwrapping of God’s giving as the One and only arrives to show us, deeper then ever before, the passion of love.
As the final fulfillment of loves quest nears, the Son allows his followers to be present in the most tender prayer between him and his Father. Read it in its entirety in John 17.
As you read you are invited into the delight which the three persons of God share with each other. There is a desire to give glory and honour to one another. There is talk of profound love, deep joy and caring protection.
The astonishing feature of the prayer is that even as this Divine unity is being described the desire of the prayer is that you and I be joined into this place of delight and love. Jesus has a profound union within the Trinity and reveals that his mission is to bring us in that very union. So he wants you to be one with him, be in you, you in him. He wants us to be one with each other.
He wants us to be with him, to see his beauty and glory to share in that love that existed before the world.
The last words of his prayer speak for themselves. I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.” John 17:26
That makes God happy. That is how much he loves, he aches, he suffers unrequitedly, he searches, he desires union. God so loved. God so loves you.
