Around the 12th September 2001 Hillary Clinton made the observation in public that “these people were just going to work”. Whilst we know what she meant and respected her sentiments there is a sense in which it was not true.
When you go to work you provide a means for yourself, and your
family, if you have one, to live. When you work you express who you
are by what you make, provide or decide. You will work out a sense of
calling and purpose which has been entrusted to you. Your identity is
shaped and informed by a sense of achievement or advancement.
Words that you say can encourage or discourage those around you.
Lessons that you pass on change other people’s lives permanently.
The style and nature of your working practices can lead others to the
Lord of your work. The decisions you make could affect the financial
Well-being of individuals, companies or countries depending on your
role. Many of the senior workers of The World Trade Centre were
making decisions which would impact the lives of the millions as well as
the few.
We need to learn to see our working days with different eyes.
Sometimes our days seem to consist of lots of small things but we are
not to belittle or despise our work or our days.
Sometimes our days seem to be pointless but they are days that the
Lord has made, days to rejoice and be glad in.
Our days are also days which we cannot foresee. We do not know
each day when we leave for work that we will come home. We may
be called home to heaven. So today we should hear God’sis voice and not be
hardened to him or anyone else. Don’t leave for work angry at
anyone.
The stakes are high for us all each day whatever our work. Nobody
just goes to work.
