GEOFFSHATTOCKweekly
Special Stress Bulletin
Issue 160
After the terrible events of July 7th in London you or some of your colleagues may be feeling under some considerable stress and strain. You may be wondering how you should face this in yourself or be of use to others. This end of week WORKTALKweekly is written as a resource for you and comes with the assurance of prayer support from WorkNet . Rather than write too many words here are a few points which we hope will be of use to you.
- People will react in different ways and at different speeds to the events. Some will react with immediate emotion and others will dwell on things more quietly. Some will be angry and others just sad. It is our role as Christians to be good news for these people and that will involve trying to let them be who they are and letting them react in their own way. For some they will take things to heart very deeply and others will quickly move on.
- Practise the presence of God in your own heart(1 Peter 2:19) praying to your Father who knows your situation as our Lord prayed during his time of stress on the cross
- Give the gift of listening to people and ask the Lord to show you when to speak and when to be silent (James 1:19)
- Stress and anger are very closely linked – as the days pass you may find that you need to introduce thoughts of forgiveness (Luke 23:34)
- Resist the temptation to offer answers but rather sympathise with genuine questions – this will encourage people to trust you when they are ready for a more robust discussion
- The way that you react in your own situation will itself be a witness – there is no need to hide your own feelings or struggles this will be of no use to you or others – Jesus allowed people to see his struggles because they were real (John 19:28)
- As your day closes you can pray the prayer that was taught to children as they went to sleep “Into you hands I commit my spirit” and you can also add the word which Jesus added – the beginning and end of our comfort in stress – “Father”
- You can find a physical relaxation exercise on the news page http://www.worktalk.gs/solutions/online/downloads/ which you can download.
The Peace of The Lord be with you.
