Son of Man 45 Son of Man: Ways of Seeing
Have you noticed that there are a variety of reasons why you cannot see something at work? One reason may be that you weren’t looking, so a possible opportunity is lost because of lack of attention.
Another reason may be that you don’t want to see. So a co-worker’s struggle or your own errors go unresolved because it is too painful or too uncomfortable to have a look.
Again, you may not see because it is beyond you to see. Perhaps you do not have the training, experience or even the capacity to grasp something. They get labeled “above my paygrade”. It can be hard to admit the last one but it need not be. Every honest person knows that they have limitations or areas where they do not have expertise. It’s just a fact of life.
Whether you weren’t looking, don’t want to see or can’t see it is possible to come to the place of honesty and openness and shed some light on those situations.
There’s a fourth type of “not seeing” which is much more dangerous. It provoked the Son of Man to express a rebuke.
There are some people who “claim to see”. It is to those that the Son of Man spoke when he said “Your guilt remains”.
The Light of the world can open blind eyes, he can enlighten fearful hearts, he can take you beyond your spiritual paygrade. But all of these involve a recognition of reality.
If you claim to be able to see already, but in reality you do not, then you are fooling yourself. This is very dangerous for it blocks out the Light.
It blocks out the Light of the world from shining into your heart, but it also stops you from being honest with yourself.
As you have seen already (Son of Man 44) Jesus went on a soul- searching, profound inner journey to discover the accuracy of his own identity. It was no simple matter for him to see his own light. I can’t even begin to describe to you this journey because it is so mysterious. But it involves a huge amount of energy, perseverance and growth. An eternity of planning, an emptying, a birth, thirty years of honesty and immeasurable love to release the living light of the world.
And you think you can see? The arrogance, pride and folly of the religious class led them only to darkness, and worse kept others trapped in the dark.
Even as I write I can hear my inner voice saying “I can see”, perhaps you do too. I hope I do. I hope you do as well. See what, we have to ask? We will let the Son of Man answer that next time.
In the meantime I suggest you join me in praying “Lord, I want to receive my sight”, trusting that “sight” will be exercised every day of your week, this week so you can see how your work lights up in his rays.
Work well.

BIBLE SECTIONS
John 9:39-41
39 Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.” 40 Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?” 41 Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.
