Issue 001
Deadline’s approaching, team’s panicking, outlook is bleak.
Customer wants solutions, boss wants blood.
Have you ever been in difficulty in an area where you are
supposed to know what you are doing?
Even the best of us find that we are sometimes floundering at
work. Faced with a problem which we simply don’t know how
to solve, we feel the pressure mounting. Tossing and turning at
night. Thrashing about for answers. It’s particularly frustrating
when it’s in your own department or brief and it’s your job to
come up with the solution
So you work harder and you work longer and you get angry
and stressed. You even fear for your livelihood. Heaven seems
silent. God seems to have put you on hold.
The first Christians were experts on the water. The Sea of
Galilee was their patch. Fishing was their business. Finding
themselves in a storm they tried every trick they knew in order
to handle it -tricks they’d tried before, tricks they’d picked up
from the best of them -but without success. To make things
worse one of their number is asleep, oblivious to their struggle
and contributing absolutely nothing to the effort. Finally they
cry out for help, to a carpenter of all people, and find the storm
calmed and themselves reprimanded for their lack of faith.
Jesus probably had several reasons for His reprimand but one
of them surely was that His very presence in the boat
guaranteed that they would not sink.
Next time you are in a storm at work remember that the
Carpenter is with you. It’s no guarantee that work will be easy.
But it is a guarantee that ultimately you will not sink. Why?
Because for you to sink with Him in your life would mean He
would have to sink as well – and that is just not going to
happen.
Mark 4:35 41
35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” 39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
